What is a power surge?
A power surge is a sudden, brief increase in electrical voltage beyond normal levels that can damage electrical and electronic equipment. It can last from a few microseconds to several seconds and occurs for various reasons — a small lightning strike that can have big impacts.
Internal causes
Everyday electrical devices (residential) and heavy industrial equipment generate surges when starting up or shutting down: equipment start-up, sudden shutdown, operating cycles, welding, load variations. Internal surges are unpredictable, but their impacts are very real.
External causes
- Lightning — lightning strikes on power lines cause sudden and unpredictable surges
- Equipment failure — the failure of electrical equipment (transformers, capacitors, etc.) can generate significant surges
- Grid switching operations — switching operations and state changes on the electrical grid can cause temporary surges
